Overview

At the Department of Ophthalmology, Nara Medical University, we are actively engaged in elucidating the pathogenesis of and developing new treatments for intraocular neovascular diseases, such as age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy, which are major causes of acquired blindness in Japan.

Our research also focuses on ocular pathology-based clinical pathology such as various tumors that arise in different parts of the eye.

Ocular tumors may develop not only in ocular adnexal structures, such as the conjunctiva and orbit, but also in the intraocular tissue. Although ocular tumors have traditionally been considered rare, their diagnostic rates are becoming more frequent in Japan, probably due to an aging population, increased exposure to ultraviolet radiation, and advances in diagnostic technology.

As ophthalmologists working at the frontline of clinical care, we examine pathological tissue specimens from the perspective of clinical practice. By correlating histopathological findings with clinical observations, we aim to contribute to more accurate diagnoses and better treatment strategies.
